5 Business Ideas For Moms

My dad has always called me the risk taker of the family, and I can certainly understand why. I’ve honestly lost count on the amount of times that I’ve tried  my hand at a new business venture. Although not every attempt was a successful one, my motivation for all was the same; I wanted to contribute financially to my home while spending more time with my family. Working 12 hours per day for someone else was simply not my dream. So if you’re also longing to work for yourself and have more time to spend with your little ones, today I’m sharing 5 business ideas that are mom-friendly that you can get started today.

5 Business Ideas For Moms

1. Virtual Assistant

For many years I believed that a virtual assistant was someone that only offered only clerical support, but that’s far from the truth. A virtual assistant can be someone that writes content for bloggers, translates documents, creates beautiful graphics, manages emails and so on. The possibilities are truly endless, and many of these services can be done 100% virtually. The best part of this business is that you can work around your own schedule which is what makes it great for moms. Virtual assistants charge anywhere from $25-$70 per hour depending on what service they offer. Check out my post on 4 steps to take to become a virtual assistant to get started!

2. Errand Service Provider

People are simply too busy and can’t always get everything on their to-do list done. This is where you can come in and save the day while making money in the process. Errand service providers charge anywhere from $15-$55 per hour depending on service and geographical area. To get started you will need some form of transportation, a phone and business brochures or cards. I suggest advertising on local papers, dropping off brochures at local businesses or even spreading the word through family and friends. You’ll have a wide range of potential clients from senior citizens to busy entrepreneurs. The best part about this business is that you can bring your little ones with you if needed.

3. Home Organizer

Are you one of those people that are great at keeping things neat and organized? Then you should consider becoming a home organizer. This is an industry that continues to see fast-paced growth with no signs of slowing down. Just like the Errand Service business,  you’ll want to advertise locally and share with people you know. Offer an initial free consultation where you can walk through the home and discuss with the client what you can do for them. Make connections with local storage facilities and research the best prices for various storage systems since some of your clients will need these. New home organizers can make between $35-$50 and seasoned ones can make even more, again it varies by your geographical area. How to Start a Home-based Professional Organizing Business is a great book with information on how to get started.

4. Blogger

Can you make money blogging? Yes, you can. Is it easy? No, but it’s not impossible. I have personally been able to monetize two different blogs. There are many ways to make money from blogging beyond displaying ads on a blog page. You can make money by writing sponsored posts which can pay anywhere from $50-$200 per post, using affiliate links, selling ad space on your sidebar or even using your blog to advertise services/products you offer. You don’t have to be a “big” blog to make money from blogging. You just have to be creative and write great content. I’ve even had some of my current VA clients find me through my blog. I strongly recommend reading Ruth’s book How to Blog for Profit (Without Selling Your Soul), it is by far the best book I’ve ever read on this topic. Don’t know how to start a blog? Check out Amy Lynn Andrews to get started.

5. Child Care Provider

If you enjoy children (not just your own) and have extra space in your home, consider becoming a child care provider. Quality child care is very hard to come by, so if you can provide this service in a safe environment, you’ll be busy in no time. Determine what age group you want to provide services for and how much you’ll charge. You can call providers in your area to get an idea of what current rates are. Also determine if you’ll provide any meals and what your hours of operation will be. I also suggest getting certified in CPR and First Aid , there are non-profit organization that offer courses for a small cost. You’ll be able to make a decent income and stay at home with your children. It’s a win-win.

With all of the above make sure you research local laws and business requirements before you get started. I always recommend checking out your local SCORE or SBA offices to help you in this area. Make sure you write a business plan that will cover things like; what services you will offer, your fees, who your ideal client is and your marketing plans. And last, but not least, don’t give up. It may take some time to grow your business, but consistency is what will determine if you succeed.
