I recently shared some fun activities that I enjoy with my family during the holiday season. One of those activities I mentioned was family movie night. Family movie night doesn’t have to be super complicated to be fun. Plus you can’t beat the savings and comfort of watching a movie at home. So today I’m sharing my favorite ways to make family movie night extra special during this time of year.
Fun Family Movie Night Ideas
Set up the atmosphere.
Turn off the lights, or at least dim them. Have the kids bring their blankets and pillows. We also get comfy in our favorite PJ’s and pull out the air mattresses. My kids absolutely love it and it’s worth the extra effort. If you have little ones, you can even create “movie tickets” that the kids must hand over before seating. You can also create a concession stand where the kids can “buy” popcorn or treats. The kids will definitely love the movie theater experience.
Pick a movie your family loves.
Instead of renting or buying a new movie, choose a movie your family already loves. This time of year, my kids are all about Christmas movies. So we try stick to the classics that we already enjoy. The kids never get tired of it and nobody winds up disappointed because the movie was a flop.
Load up on snacks.
You can’t have movie night without snacks. You can stick with the traditional movie snacks like popcorn, nachos and candy. Or you can create a theme that compliments the movie you’re watching. It can either be foods that are seen throughout the movie or are somehow connected to the characters. We personally like to stick with traditional snacks, but Christmas cookies and treats are our go-to right now.
Make hot chocolate.
You can’t watch holiday movies without a cup of hot chocolate. Or at least not in my home. 😉 The kids love making hot chocolate and adding their favorite toppings. It’s actually funny to see how different we are when it comes to our hot chocolate. I prefer whipped cream and peppermint with mine, while my son enjoys his with marshmallows. Did you know that TruMoo is just as delicious hot as it is cold? Yup, and I love that it’s made with real milk, the right amount of chocolate and saves me from having to spend so much time in the kitchen.
And as the temperature drops, a cup of TruMoo hot chocolate is a great way to get warm and cozy. Make it extra special for the kids and put out several topping options for them to choose from. I also like making these chocolate dipped spoons that they can use to stir into their hot chocolate.
I make several flavor combinations so no one is left out. From white chocolate with crushed peppermint to milk chocolate with peanut butter chips, there’s something for everyone.
Do it again.
It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of the season, but it’s important to take a time-out to connect with your family. Family movie night is only one of many ways to spend time with your loved ones. What’s important is that you don’t make it a one-time thing. Set time aside each week to get together and do something fun. It can be game night, cooking, reading together or anything else that your family enjoys.
TruMoo is also a great addition to indoor family time, and nothing beats a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day.
