I have a love/hate relationship with New Year’s resolutions. I believe the concept is great, and for some people, it can be the push they need to reach a goal or make lifestyle changes. Personally, I prefer to create a list of goals that fall under my word of the year. This year, I chose the word “Rise”. Last year I felt I was going through a transition and I had a hard time making progress in various areas. I focused on my mental and physical health which was great, but everything else was put on hold. This year, I’m pushing forward with plans that were stagnant as our family prepares for some big life changes. It’s scary, but also very exciting.
The older I get, the more I realize how insignificant our trials are when we look at the bigger picture. I want to own my life and truly enjoy every bit of what it has to offer. It doesn’t mean that things will go smoothly, seriously, does it ever? But I will embrace the good, the bad, and the unexpected surprises that life plans to throw our way this new year.
What I’m doing more of:
Spending more time with my family-
I thought I was doing a pretty good job at being present until one day it dawned on me that I was slowly falling back in the busy trap. My plan is to set a work schedule (like I used to have) and stick with it. That means no responding to emails, messages or texts after my work hours. Instead, this will be the time I focus solely on my husband and kids. I noticed my youngest inherited my love for baking so my plan is to make time for us to whip up some fun treats together.
I’ve already done this with some of our household chores, but recently I noticed that I’m still doing the bulk of the chores in our home. If I didn’t work from home, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but my business is demanding enough and I simply can’t do it all. My plan is to delegate a few additional household tasks to my family (it’s THEIR home too!) and hire help for my business. In the end, I much rather be the mom that can join in on a game or watch a movie instead of being consumed with work. I’m sure my family would also agree.
Stressing less about meals-
Life’s demanding enough so dinner shouldn’t be. Over the years I’ve learned to simplify dinner time, so I no longer have to view it as a chore or as another item on my to-do list. My goal is to continue to planning meals, keeping things simple and enlisting help when necessary. When my day is jammed packed or I simply need a break, I leave the prep work to On-Cor so I can focus on the things that truly matter. One of our favorite entrées is the Gravy & 6 Salisbury Steaks which I like to pair with creamy mashed potatoes and dinner rolls.
Investing in real-life relationships-
I tend to shy away from meeting new people and typically stick with my inner circle (family mostly). However, this past year I met some incredible ladies through blogging that quickly became friends. Although we communicate online most of the time, we have plans to meet regularly this year. It might not seem like a big deal, but for this introvert, it’s a huge deal.
