A combination of guava, cream cheese and coffee cake, make this recipe a must try!
The past month has been a whirlwind. We celebrated my daughter and step-son’s high school graduation, took a few day trips, and also found out my daughter got accepted to her first choice college.
Although I’ve cut back a bit on blogging in order to enjoy time with family, I found myself a bit busier than I would have liked. So what did I do to decompress? I took a break, and made this delicious dessert.
Before we get into the yummy details, I need to share a bit about my love with guava paste. I grew up eating this Latin staple while living in Puerto Rico. Not only is it eaten layered with cheese and crackers, it’s also used in pastries and cakes.
I love coffee cake, and I had tweaked a few recipes that I enjoyed from the Food Network. But this recipe is by far my favorite creation. It’s everything I enjoy combined into one delicious pan, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
Guava and Cream Cheese Coffee Cake
For the crumble topping, combine white sugar, brown sugar and flour with chilled butter. Mix well until the mixture begins to look lumpy.
I find that mixing with a fork helps. Break up larger pieces with your hands if needed. Place in the refrigerator.
Sift flour, salt and baking soda and set aside. Next, cream butter with white and brown sugar in a large bowl. Whisk egg, vanilla extract and sour cream.
Mix in the sour cream mixture and flour mixture in increments. Trust me on this one. The first time I did this, I added it all at once and made a huge mess.
Mix well until smooth. Grease a 9×13 pan with butter and add half the mixture. You’ll need to spread it out since this will be thicker than your typically cake batter.
Cut up thin slices of guava paste and line up to cover batter. Mix cream cheese and white sugar. Cover guava paste with cream cheese mixture and cover with the rest of the batter.
I actually pipe the cream cheese from a ziplock baggie since it’s a lot easier. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly all over the batter.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 50-60 minutes (depending on your oven), or until toothpick comes out clean. Well not 100% clean since you’ll have a yummy guava and cream cheese center waiting to be devoured. 😉
Cool, cut, and serve. This Guava and Cream cheese Coffee Cake is the perfect dessert, and one of my favorite ways to enjoy the flavors from my childhood.
Have you ever tried guava paste? If yes, what’s your favorite way to eat it? I welcome all new recipes and ideas.

I will have to try this! Where do I find guava paste though? If this is as good as your banana bread recipe my family will go crazy for it!!
Hi Cheryl. Thank you! 🙂 You can find the guava paste in the international food aisle at most grocery stores. Goya sells it, and I find that it’s the most commonly used brand for guava paste here in the U.S.
