Who’s excited for summer?! (raises both hand) Although my initial plan was to homeschool throughout the year, we’re further along than I expected and plan to take a break. However, this also means that I have to figure out ways to keep the kids busy this summer. Since we don’t do any major traveling during the summer, to avoid the crowds and higher resort fees, I have to get a bit creative. Today I’m sharing how we’re keeping our summer costs low, along with some fun ideas that won’t bust your budget.
How to Have a Debt-Free Summer
Keep it local
It’s funny how most of us can’t wait for summer to arrive to head to another state. But have you considered staying put, and discovering your own local area? You might be surprised to find some hidden gems in your town. This summer, my plan is to enjoy our local museums. parks and attractions to keep our expenses low. I also started a list of free family-friendly spots that we can choose from throughout the summer. Keeping the kids entertained can be inexpensive, if we just spend a little time researching and planning.
Don’t stay overnight
We love the beach, but living in Central Pennsylvania greatly limits our options. The closest family-friendly beach is almost 3 hours away and a decent hotel will cost at least $350+ per night. Instead, we plan on taking a couple of day trips to the beach this summer. This will enable us to come home the same day and save hundreds of dollars. I find that as long as we leave super early in the morning, we wind up having plenty of time to enjoy our destination.
Fund your fun with clutter
In order to pay for our season passes to Hersheypark, I’ve sold my kids outgrown clothes, old books, toys and electronics. It’s a win-win situation because I’m able to get rid of clutter, and my family gets to enjoy the park several times throughout the year. If you need cash to fund your summer activities, look around your home to see what you can sell before spending any of your hard earned cash. Also, let the kids know what you’re doing since they’ll likely help out knowing there’s an incentive involved.
Enjoy the little things
Everything you do with your family doesn’t have to be on a grand scale. A trip to your local farmer’s market can be it’s own little adventure. Encourage your kids to help you select produce, and involve them in the food preparation once you’re home. Even a backyard BBQ can be a great way to spend time together. Grab a Frisbee, have a water balloon fight, or toss a ball around. Your kids will enjoy spending time with you, and simply won’t care that it didn’t cost you anything.
