My baby girl is turning 8 months old later this week. I still can’t believe it! It makes me sad to think that she’ll be a year old very soon, but I’m also excited to see her personality develop each day. OK, confession time! My sweet baby girl still sleeps in my room in a portable crib and occasionally makes her way to our bed at the break of dawn. I truly have zero clue how she does it. 😉
We know that it’s time for her to finally sleep in her crib and in her room without mommy or daddy being nearby. Mainly because she tends to wake up a few times during the night. She’ll quickly go back to sleep, but for us it’s another story. So we are finally making a serious effort to transition her to the crib. I remember when we did this with my son when he was a baby. Hopefully it will work again this time around. Here are some tips for those of you that are going through the same process.
3 Tips To Get Baby To Sleep In The Crib
1. Start with naps.
You want your baby to get acquainted with their crib. The best way to do this is to start with naps. It’s a great way to ease into things before going for the “big one”. Plus keeping the place your baby sleeps the same, will help your baby associate the crib with sleep.
2. Create a routine.
This will be different for every baby. Start about an hour before bedtime to help your baby unwind. This may involve a bath, reading a book or a massage. Just make sure you’re consistent and stick to the routine so your baby knows what to expect.
3. Use a baby video monitor.
Consider this a special tip for mommies and daddies that feel the need to check on their baby a million times during the transition process. I know I can’t be the only one! I remember with my son how I would freak out if I heard even the slightest sound coming from his baby’s monitor only to rush to the bedroom and find out nothing was wrong. So you can imagine why I love being able to see and hear my baby girl. One of the best baby video monitors on the market is the VTech VM333 Baby Monitor and here’s why:
- The camera tilts up and down, moves from side to side and zooms in so you can make sure your baby is still there. Can you tell I had a baby that figured out how to climb out of his crib at the age of 1? Seriously, I wish I was joking.
- The system supports up to 4 cameras on one parent unit. So if you have multiple children in separate bedrooms, would like a camera in the playroom or simply want to watch your baby from every angle (you know you thought about it), you can easily do so.
- It has a temperature indicator. Our house is typically a lot warmer on the 2nd floor than it is on the 1st floor. So it’s easy for us to misjudge the temperature in the kids’ bedrooms. With the VTech baby video monitor, I can easily figure out if the temperature is too hot or too cold for my baby girl.
- Not only can you listen and watch your baby, but you can also talk to your baby through the monitor. Say what?! This is by far one of the best feature of the VTech baby video monitor. I know that if my baby girl hears me, she’ll think mommy is in the room with her and be less likely to start crying.
- You don’t want to miss out on the simple yet precious moments. Life is busy, and we often forget to stop, look and listen to our children. I love that I’m able to watch and listen to my baby girl babble or say “mama” after waking up.
Just be ready for some tears during the transition process (mostly yours!). However, I can assure you that it does get easier.
Do you have any tips you can offer to help baby sleep in the crib? Did you use a baby video monitor? I would love to hear from you!
Wow, monitors have come a long way since my son was young. A monitor with that many features will be useful for many years to come. BTW what a living doll your daughter is — so cute. 🙂
Thank you Sheila! 🙂 Yes, I agree that they have come along way, even compared to 10 years ago when my son was a baby. I’m hoping to get many years of use from this one.
I <3 that monitor! Even though we decided on co.sleeping I obviously don't sleep at the same time as my daughter so that monitor would b great to have in any case!
It could easily come in handy for older kids, that like to play in their rooms after bedtime 😛 <3 it!
I agree Gabi! I love that I can use it to watch my kids as they get older. 🙂
The video monitor looks really useful, I remember thinking I heard them crying and rushing up to find they were actually fast asleep! Luckily mine were not too difficult to transition to their cot – good luck with your daughter!
Ha! I did that all the time, it was a great workout. 🙂 I have a feeling this little one is going to be harder to transition than my son. Thanks Anna!
