When someone in our home gets sick, I go into mommy mode. Typically my first inclination is to call our family doctor and find out what steps to take. But when it’s a common cold and cough, I know there are a few things I can do without leaving the home. I find that one of the toughest things to deal with is a persistent cough. Not only is it annoying, it can also leave you feeling exhausted. So today I want to share some tips that can help you and your family kick a stubborn cough to the curb.
How To Kick A Stubborn Cough To The Curb
When I’m not feeling well, I find that drinking hot tea can be a great way to to settle a stubborn cough. I like to add ginger and honey to lemon tea, which can also help relieve cold symptoms. Along with hot tea, I find that a delicious bowl of chicken soup can also help soothe my throat and diminish a cough. This is also what I give my kids when they aren’t feeling well and have lost their appetite. Most importantly, you want to ensure that you stay hydrated with clear fluids that will help loosen up mucus.
Steam it up
If possible, take a hot shower if you’re having a cough attack. The steam from a hot shower will help open up your airways and hopefully give you some relief. A hot shower is also relaxing and welcomed when I’m not feeling the greatest. For younger children, running a warm bath will probably be a better option. I also like to use a cool mist humidifier to help with congestion and cough. A cool mist humidifier is also the safer option if you plan to use it in a child’s bedroom.
Grab Vicks VapoRub
Growing up, my home always had a jar of Vicks VapoRub, or Vaporú, handy. As a kid, I remember my mom rubbing it on at night to help me feel instant relief. There has been an ongoing joke in our family because it didn’t matter what ailment we had, VapoRub was the solution. If you’re Latino, you know exactly what I’m talking about. 😉 I’m sure my abuelitas (grandmothers) had a lot to do with it, but truly they were right in trusting VapoRub. Nothing is more calming and soothing than the ingredients inside the jar, and it’s what we use in our home when the first cough strikes. I have trusted VapoRub before I can remember and now I use it on the people I love the most. If you need to stock up, simply click here to grab a coupon!
