How to Save On Fresh Fruit And Veggies
Know your sales and watch for them
If a store happens to have a lot of a certain item on hand at the end of a specific season, what do they do? They put it on sale or mark it down. Use this to your advantage when buying. Watch for sales (know your regular prices beforehand so you can judge it if really is a good deal) and stock up when you find one.
Use your freezer, stove and oven
Since I just told you to stock up, you may be wondering how to keep it all from going bad? The answer to that is to preserve it. Use your oven to dehydrate, freeze what you can and if you can’t do the other 2 options, learn to can. By buying in bulk when the prices are low and preserving them for later, you’ll have a steady and fresh supply of produce long after the sales are done.
Buy locally
Mass chains and big grocery stores typically charge more for their items so you may have better luck saving money if you buy locally at a farmers market or roadside stand. Sometimes this isn’t the case, but more often than not a local farmer will be more willing to work with you on prices than a bigger chain is going to be.
Barter with friends and neighbors
If your neighbor has a garden and you don’t, see if they’re willing to barter. In exchange for fresh goodies from their garden, you could offer things like baby-sitting, cleaning help and more! The possibilities are endless if you really put your mind to it.
Grow your own
Above all else if you want fruits and vegetables for less, the absolute best way to have them is to grow your own. If you’ve never had a garden before, start small with something like an herb garden. As you grow in your gardening abilities, so will the savings you see from them!
