This post about Internet Essentials is sponsored by Comcast. All opinions and experiences are my own.
Last week we had a strong line of storms come through our area. Not only did the storms cause structural damage in our area, it also knocked out the internet connection which cut out all communication. You know the old saying: “You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone”. Those hours without internet service felt like a lifetime and made me realize how essential the internet is to our family.
Why internet connection is vital
Six years ago, I lost my job unexpectedly. We were already living paycheck to paycheck so any expenses outside of our “needs” were immediately eliminated. During this financially lean season, I was also homeschooling our children. When my husband and I discussed which utilities would be eliminated, the internet was not an option.
Thanks to our internet connection, I was able to download teaching aids and resources to help me accommodate my children’s unique learning styles. It didn’t make sense to get rid of the one component that gave us access to an infinite number of educational tools. The internet also enabled me to grow my sideline business into a thriving source of income for our family. The internet was no longer a luxury for our family, it had become a basic necessity.
Our internet connection did come at a cost which at the time was very hard to afford. We understood the value of having internet access and instead we chose to cut back in other areas, but this is not always an option for families with a very limited budget. Unfortunately, forgoing the internet can also limit a family’s ability to seek employment, start a business, or have access to educational tools and online resources that could help improve their quality of life.
Affordable internet for your family
This is the reason I love Comcast’s initiative to connect low-income families, elderly, and military veterans in the U.S., to the internet through its Internet Essentials program. Internet Essentials from Comcast is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive high-speed Internet adoption program that provides low-cost, high-speed Internet service for $9.95 a month plus tax. The program has already helped connect over six million low-income Americans to the internet! The program also offers the option to purchase an Internet-ready laptop or desktop computer for under $150 once you become an Internet Essentials customer.
The Learning Center, a new addition to the program, provides free online resources and in-person classes to help you continue your digital education. The online tutorials include Online Security and Safety, Education Resources, Art and Design, and even Employment Resources. I also checked out the free classes being offered in my local area and found a variety of classes that included Internet & Email Basics as well as Introduction to Microsoft Office.
