Bonding with Baby over Bath Time

Approximately a year ago, I started feeling extremely sick and exhausted. I basically chalked it up to a very busy schedule and lack of rest. Several weeks later, I was shocked to find myself staring at a positive pregnancy test. My husband and I were done in the baby making department, like completely done, or so we thought.

Nine months later, our baby boy made his grand entrance and joined our family. I was initially concerned about bonding with my little guy. Would I be able to juggle it all and still be present? I struggled with these thoughts because I didn’t feel mentally or physically prepared for this new season. Parenting books are great for baby one, maybe two, but what do you when it’s not your first rodeo and your hands are already full? I admit that it wasn’t easy adjusting to life with a newborn, but bonding through everyday caregiving helped me with the transition.

One of my favorite ways to bond with my baby boy is during bath time. My baby’s first bath was not a memorable moment. I wasn’t 100% ready and forgot a few things that made the whole experience stressful for both of us. He basically screamed during the entire ordeal and left me dreading the next bath.

I could’ve easily passed it off to my husband, but I knew that bath time would give me the perfect opportunity to connect and spend time with my baby boy. So the second time around, I prepared ahead and made sure I had everything ready to go.

Bath time essentials

Before bath time, ensure that you have all of the essentials on hand. My bath time must-haves include:

  • Washcloths
  • Baby bathtub
  • Baby Dove Sensitive Moisture Tip to Toe Wash
  • Bath wrap or hooded towel
  • Baby Dove Sensitive Moisture Baby Lotion

Connect with your baby

Make sure you set aside uninterrupted time for bath time. The last thing you want to do is rush it or have it overlap with your baby’s feeding schedule. I like to immerse myself in the moment and avoid all possible distractions.

I also like to give my baby boy massages during bath time. I find that it helps soothe and relax him during the process. Lately, he seems to really enjoy when I sing lullabies during bath time. Find what works for your little one and go from there. Anything that helps them feel safe and helps you build a stronger bond together is great.
